Bee-tight Mesh Size and Varroa Monitoring Support
The 3.15 × 3.15 mm mesh opening is chosen so that the screen reliably contains bees (is bee-tight), but at the same time allows Varroa destructor mites to fall through onto the bottom board. This makes it ideal for manufacturing screened varroa bottom boards, which help monitor natural mite drop. Compared to galvanized mesh, stainless steel has the advantage of better corrosion resistance, which is accelerated by humid environments and the use of organic acids when treating bee colonies.
