Frame spacer
Spacers are commonly used to ensure the correct bee space between individual frames in a hive box. Spacers are available for purchase individually, by weight, or by count. You can choose from Czech-made thermoplastic spacers or conical spacers with a recess for a small nail. It is also possible to buy colored spacers, which beekeepers use to distinguish the breeding years of their queen bees. Nowadays, you can also get metal spacing combs that are mounted inside the hive box. The frames simply slide into these combs, eliminating the need for individual spacers.
Beekeeping Spacers
Beekeeping spacers may seem like a small component, yet they are an essential part of any traditional frame system. Although minor in size, their role in maintaining proper organization within the hive boxes is crucial. Spacers ensure the correct bee space (typically 8–10 mm), allowing bees to move freely, ensuring natural ventilation, and preventing frames from sticking together with wax or propolis.
Why Spacers Are So Important for Bees
The correct distance between frames affects not only the beekeeper’s ease of work but also the health and productivity of the colony. If the bee space is too narrow, the bees fill it with propolis, making frame handling difficult. Conversely, if the gap is too wide, they start building irregular comb, known as burr comb. Spacers therefore serve as a simple yet highly effective way to maintain natural order within the hive.
-
Maintain the ideal bee space: Bees can move freely between frames without unnecessary disturbance.
-
Ease frame handling: Frames don’t stick together or get damaged during inspections, making work faster and gentler.
-
Improve hive microclimate: Even spacing supports good air circulation and promotes proper honey ripening.
-
Protect the bees: Proper spacing minimizes the risk of injuring bees or the queen during hive inspections.
Types of Beekeeping Spacers
Several types of spacers are available on the market, differing in material, shape, and mounting method. Each has its advantages and is suitable for different hive types and beekeeping styles.
Plastic Spacers
Plastic spacers are a modern and practical alternative to metal ones. They are lightweight, easy to install, do not damage frames or honey extractors, and bees are less likely to glue them with propolis. They are also available in various colors, which can be used to mark frames by age or brood type.
-
With nail or push-in design: Easy installation without glue or pre-drilling.
-
Color options: Help with organization and quick frame identification during inspections.
Metal Spacers
Metal spacers are a time-tested classic used by beekeepers for decades. They are extremely durable and sturdy and can be easily cleaned or disinfected by flaming or boiling. Among the most popular designs are:
-
U-shaped spacers (standard type): Simple design suitable for most hives, easy to install using nails.
-
Conical spacers: The tapered shape allows frames to slide smoothly into place without damaging the spacer or the frame.
Installation and Proper Use of Spacers
When installing spacers, precise placement is essential. The recommended layout is the “two on one side, two on the other” diagonal method, ensuring an equal distance between all frames. Typically, spacers are attached to the side bars so that a gap of 8–10 mm remains between frames.
Beekeeper’s Tip: To simplify installation, mark the spacer positions with a pencil or template before attaching them. Once all spacers are in place, the frames will fit neatly and the spacing will remain consistent throughout the hive boxes.
Alternatives to Spacers
For beekeepers who prefer different systems, there are metal spacing racks made of steel or stainless steel. These attach directly to the hive body and maintain uniform spacing without the need to mount individual spacers.
How to Choose Spacers for Your Hive Type
When choosing the right spacers, consider the frame size and hive design. For instance, hives using the 39×24 Czech frame size require different spacer lengths than Langstroth or Zander hives. Metal models are ideal for long-term use, while plastic versions are suitable for beekeepers seeking lightweight and affordable options.
