Tangential honey extractors

Tangential (diagonal) honey extractors are an ideal choice for beekeepers with a smaller number of colonies — approximately 1 to 15 hives. Their advantages lie in their simple design, versatility, and reliability. Tangential extractors feature a basket in which the frames are placed horizontally in relation to the drum. Honey is first extracted from one side of the frame, then the frames are turned and reinserted to extract the other side. They are made of stainless steel, equipped with baskets for 3–5 frames, and available with manual, electric, or combined drive options. We provide both warranty and post-warranty service, making them a dependable investment for your beekeeping operation. A drainage valve at the bottom ensures complete honey discharge without the need to tilt the extractor.

Tangential (Diagonal) Honey Extractors

Tangential honey extractors represent the gold standard in the world of beekeeping. They are particularly popular for their simplicity, compact size, and user-friendly operation. They serve as an essential tool for beekeepers managing small to medium-sized apiaries, providing an effective and straightforward way to extract honey from combs. These extractors are best suited for beekeepers with up to about 20 colonies.

Principle of the Honey Extraction Process

  1. Extracting the first side: The extractor is set in motion, and honey is spun out from one side of the frame. This ensures both time efficiency and effective extraction.

  2. Turning the frames: Once one side has been emptied, the frames are removed from the basket.

  3. Reinserting and extracting the other side: The frames are turned and placed back into the basket to allow honey extraction from the opposite side. This process ensures that every drop of honey is recovered.

Using a tangential extractor is an efficient way to maximize honey yield while preserving the high quality of your bee products. This method is ideal especially for small and mid-sized beekeeping operations where efficient use of time and resources is essential.

Why Choose a Tangential Honey Extractor?

The diagonal honey extractor stands out for its versatility. It is compatible with a variety of frame types, including Langstroth and others, offering flexibility that radial extractors often cannot provide. Thanks to its design and capacity, it is a great choice for novice beekeepers and small professional apiaries that prioritize reliability and ease of operation over large-scale production.

Construction and Functionality

The key feature of a diagonal extractor is its design. The main component is a stainless steel drum that meets all food-grade standards. This robust drum is set firmly on three legs for maximum stability. Inside, a basket holds between 3 and 5 frames, depending on the model.

Beekeepers can choose between manual, electric, or combined drives. The manual drive uses a hand crank that allows the extractor to spin mechanically. The electric drive saves both time and effort, making it ideal for faster, more efficient honey extraction. The combined drive serves as a great balance for beekeepers operating in areas without a permanent power source.

The extraction process works through centrifugal force — as the basket spins, honey is flung from the comb cells against the drum walls and drains down toward the bottom valve. This drain valve simplifies the transfer of honey to a filter and subsequently into a settling tank.

Choosing Between 3-Frame and 4-Frame Extractors

When selecting the right diagonal extractor, it’s important to consider your hive capacity and the number of frames to be extracted. For smaller operations, a 3-frame extractor often provides sufficient capacity and affordability. For those managing more hives, a 4- or 5-frame model can significantly reduce the time spent on extraction.

Affordability and Subsidy Options

Our range of diagonal honey extractors includes models for every budget. Thanks to available beekeeping subsidy programs, you can benefit from significant cost savings, making investment in a high-quality extractor even more affordable.
