Punching of frames

Frame punching is an essential step for threading and securing the wire. Various tools can be used for this purpose, such as punches that perforate the frame with a stainless steel needle without the need for electricity. Modern punches further simplify the process by inserting eyelets directly while creating the hole. Another method is drilling, performed with a standard drill and a 2 mm bit depending on the type of eyelet. If you are not using eyelets, a smaller drill bit diameter can be chosen. For easier handling, it is better to use cordless drills or drills with a stand, as electric drills can be heavy. Drilling kits can also make the work more efficient. We also offer frame punches that use a stainless steel needle and do not require electricity.

Frame perforation – the key step to strong and precise beehive frames

Perforating frames is an essential step in preparing each frame before wiring. Properly made holes in the side bars ensure smooth and accurate wire alignment, keeping the foundation sheet in an ideal position. Whether you are a beginner beekeeper or run a professional apiary, using the right technique and tools for frame perforation will make your work easier and extend the lifespan of your frames.

Why proper frame perforation matters

Precisely placed holes allow for even wire tension and prevent the wax foundation from deforming. If the holes are drilled at inconsistent heights or incorrect angles, it may lead to an uneven frame load and damage to the comb. Quality perforation therefore contributes not only to frame strength, but also to the comfort of the bees during comb building and to higher efficiency in beekeeping operations.

Tools for frame perforation

Every beekeeper can choose the right tool for frame preparation depending on the number of frames and preferred working style:

1. Manual frame punches

Simple, efficient, and ideal for smaller operations. A manual press lets you punch holes precisely where needed. Built-in guides ensure consistent spacing, making subsequent wiring quick and smooth.

  • Fast operation: One press creates a hole without extra adjustments.

  • No waste: No sawdust or splinters as with drilling.

  • Easy maintenance: Durable construction with minimal wear.

2. Drilling jigs

Perfect for more experienced beekeepers or for frames made of harder wood. Drilling templates ensure that all holes are made at the same height and spacing without damaging the frame material. They are especially recommended where maximum precision is required for large-scale work.

3. Eyelets and accessories

To increase the durability of frames and to maintain proper wire tension, beekeeping eyelets are often used. These small metal sleeves are inserted into the prepared holes, forming a strong guide for the wire. They prevent the wire from cutting into the wood and help it remain tight over time.

  • Protect the frame wood from wire damage.

  • Maintain stable wire tension despite temperature or humidity changes.

  • Available in stainless steel, brass, or tin-plated metal.

How to choose the right tool

Beginners will appreciate a universal punch with integrated eyelet installation, making the entire preparation process simpler and faster.

Professional beekeepers may benefit from investing in a sturdy bench perforator with adjustable spacing for different frame standards – Langstroth, Dadant, Zander, or any other system in use.

Frame perforation step by step

  • First, check that the wood is dry and of good quality.

  • Determine the correct hole height according to your frame size.

  • Use a jig or guiding rail for uniform hole positioning.

  • After drilling or punching, insert the eyelets and check wire passage.

Part of complete frame preparation equipment

Frame perforation is one of the first yet most important steps in frame preparation. It is followed by frame wiring, inserting the foundation sheet, embedding, and placing frames into the hive. Each step influences the quality of the final comb, the stability of the structure, and the comfort of the bees while working.
