Awl for Punching and Cleaning Beekeeping Frames

A handy helper not only for frames. This practical awl is useful for maintaining beekeeping frames, especially for quickly clearing holes for wiring. It is a simple hand tool with a massive sharp point (without an eye) and a wooden handle that facilitates a firm grip. Originally, the awl is also used in leather craft work – for piercing and creating holes, for example when stitching.

Why is an awl worthwhile in beekeeping?

When renovating older frames, the holes for wire are often clogged with wax and propolis. A drill is not ideal here: a thin drill bit can easily break, heating melts the wax and the hole "seals" again. A steel awl works simply and cleanly – the sharp point mechanically clears the hole "cold," pushes out impurities, and the hole is ready for new wiring in an instant.

Comfortable grip and multiple uses

The wooden handle is shaped to fit comfortably in the palm and doesn't press even when working on a larger number of frames. In addition to cleaning and clearing holes, you can use it for minor repairs of beekeeping equipment, pre-marking holes for screws in harder wood, or when working with leather – for example, if you use leather straps to secure hives during migratory beekeeping.
