By confining the queen to a frame
Requires a special frame cage and strict adherence to the exact time sequence shown in the image below. We restrict the queen's movement and egg-laying to only a few frames that we precisely determine. Since the entire cycle takes longer than the bee hatching cycle, we will later have brood only on those frames where the queen was confined, giving us complete control over which frames may contain Varroa mites. Varroa mites only infest capped brood cells, so by following the time schedule, we can achieve up to 97% effectiveness.
Procedure
Day 1: insert caged frame A into the colony. Day 9: remove the cage from frame A and insert a new frame B and cage the queen on it. Day 18: remove frame A from the colony and destroy it, remove the cage from frame B and place it on a new frame C. Day 27: remove frame B from the colony, destroy it, and remove the cage from frame C. Day 36: remove frame C and destroy it as well. Now we should have eliminated at least 97% of Varroa mites without using any chemicals.
How to prevent Varroa reinfestation
To avoid reinfesting the colony with Varroa mites, we need to destroy the mites on the infested frames. The most effective method is to place the frames in a freezer for 48 hours after removing them from the hive, and then clean the frames or destroy them completely, whichever you consider appropriate.
