Section Isolator (EPO Cassette): A Modern Aid for Biotechnical Varroa Control

Do you want to keep your bee colonies in good condition while limiting the excessive use of harsh chemical treatments? The section isolator in the form of an EPO cassette is a practical tool for temporary isolation of the queen bee. It allows you to work specifically with the natural brood cycle of the colony and thus effectively intervene against the Varroa destructor mite. When used correctly, it helps reduce the chemical burden on bees, supports colony vitality, and contributes to the production of quality honey.

A Method Supported by Practice and Research

The EPO cassette is not just another ordinary beekeeping tool. It is part of a modern biotechnical method for varroa control that works with a controlled broodless period and subsequent brood isolation. This procedure was described by Prof. Krzysztof Olszewski in collaboration with the Varroaresistenz 2033 movement. It offers beekeepers a well-thought-out alternative to intensive chemical treatment and fits well into nature-friendly and ecologically oriented beekeeping.

Adaptation According to Colony Strength

Each colony requires a slightly different approach. The EPO section isolator therefore allows two methods of use depending on the current colony strength, brood nest condition, and nectar flow conditions. It can be inserted into an empty frame or applied directly into the comb. The second option is particularly suitable for weaker colonies or during periods of weak nectar flow. The cassette is equipped with an opening with a metal clip that safely holds the queen inside and also facilitates her subsequent release.

How Does the Isolator Work in the Hive?

The queen bee is first enclosed in the EPO section cassette. The entire assembly is then placed in the space defined by the queen excluder and positioned in the center of the brood nest. In the first phase, the queen cannot lay eggs outside the cassette, which gradually interrupts the brood cycle. After removing the metal clip, the queen moves to the so-called trap comb within the isolated space. The newly established brood attracts Varroa mites, which are drawn into it. This brood is subsequently removed from the hive, which can significantly reduce the mite population without using acids or amitraz-based treatments.

Who Is the EPO Cassette Suitable For?

The section isolator will be appreciated especially by beekeepers who want better control over queen laying and use integrated colony protection methods. It is suitable for organically managed apiaries as well as for breeders who want to reduce the number of combs destined for melting and simultaneously support strong colonies prepared for overwintering. If you are looking for a more sustainable way to work with varroa, the EPO cassette is an effective tool for your beekeeping practice.
