Phacelia tanacetifolia seeds - 1 kg
Phacelia Tansy-leaved – Honey Plant Seeds for Bees (1 kg)
Phacelia tansy-leaved (lat. Phacelia tanacetifolia) is among the most sought-after honey plants and has a firm place in bee pastures. It is an annual herb growing approximately 70–80 cm tall, which during flowering offers lavender-blue flowers literally covered with pollinators. Originally from California, but since the 19th century it has been successfully cultivated in our region. It belongs to the borage family and blooms with rich, dense clusters composed of many small flowers with high nectar production.
Excellent forage for bee colonies: nectar and pollen
Phacelia is a proven choice wherever you want to strengthen the nectar and pollen supply around the apiary during flowering. When sown near hives, it provides bees with a stable food source, which usually shows in the condition of colonies and honey flow. The nectar is typically sugary and phacelia also produces distinctive dark blue pollen, which bees collect well. The estimated yield is approximately 2–5 kg of honey per 1 are (100 m²). In practice, it can help bridge nectar gaps, especially during summer periods.
Additional benefit: green manure and soil care
Besides beekeeping use, phacelia is also valued as green manure. It germinates quickly, has a short growing season and creates dense growth that limits weeds while helping protect soil from overheating and drying out. The root system contributes to improving soil structure, which benefits both garden and field. Due to its hardiness, it is also suitable for higher altitudes.
How to sow phacelia
Sow after severe frosts have passed, ideally into warmed soil. Sowing is most commonly done from April to June. Work seeds to a depth of approximately 1–2 cm. Phacelia likes sunny locations – in shade, flowering and nectar production tend to be weaker. Flowers usually appear from June to September depending on sowing date. For sowing 1 hectare, count on approximately 12–17 kg of seed.
