Wooden Barrier Against Building in Bottom Space – Clean Bottom Board Without "Wild Comb"
Clean bottom space and comfortable manipulation during inspections are fundamentals that every beekeeper appreciates. Wooden barrier against building in bottom space is a practical accessory for colonies that like to utilize free space in high bottom boards for unwanted construction of so-called wild comb. High bottom boards are excellent for wintering and treatment, but during the season the free bottom space can tempt bees to draw out combs downward. This barrier helps clearly define the space and keep the hive bottom clean.
Why Use a Bottom Space Barrier
The greatest advantage is time saving and gentler work with the colony. If the bottom space is built up, when lifting supers or checking the bottom board, fresh comb construction often gets torn. This means mess, leaking stores, risk of robbing and unnecessary stress for the bees – including possible losses of individuals found in the wild comb. By inserting the barrier, you simply indicate to the bees where they should no longer build, while maintaining access to a clean bottom for convenient monitoring of varroa mite drop.
Natural Material and Quick Installation
The barrier is made from natural wood, which is natural for the hive environment and well accepted by bees. Unlike plastic or metal, wood naturally works in the hive and doesn't disturb the microclimate. The design is created so it doesn't restrict air flow in the bottom space important for ventilation, while mechanically preventing extension of comb construction below frames. Installation is very simple – just insert the barrier into the hive bottom under the frames.
Technical Parameters
| Parameter | Value |
| Material | Natural wood (without chemical treatment) |
| Purpose | High hive bottom boards (preventing wild comb construction in bottom space) |
| Placement | Bottom space (lower part of hive under frames) |
| Function | Mechanical barrier while maintaining ventilation |
| Maintenance | Easy cleaning (mechanical removal of propolis and debris) |
Tip for beekeepers: The barrier is suitable to insert in spring during first expansion, when building instinct significantly increases. For winter you can remove it so the winter cluster in the bottom space has more room for natural clustering.
