Formidol evaporator
Formidol 40 ml – Gentle and Effective Bee Colony Protection (2 pcs per package)
Do you need to effectively combat parasites while avoiding unwanted chemical residues in the hive? Formidol is a long-proven beekeeping treatment developed by the Czech Bee Research Institute in Dol. It utilizes the effect of formic acid and helps maintain bee colonies in good condition, especially during the post-honey harvest period and broodless time.
A major advantage is the minimal risk of residues – the active ingredient is formic acid, which occurs naturally in honey. Therefore, Formidol is a suitable choice for beekeepers who want to produce clean honey and wax without unnecessary burden. The product is available over-the-counter and does not require a veterinary prescription.
What Formidol works against and why beekeepers use it
Formidol is valued in practice for its broad effect, which when used correctly helps solve multiple problems simultaneously:
1. Varroosis (Varroa destructor)
Formic acid vapors penetrate even under the cappings of capped brood, where the mite most commonly reproduces. It is also a substance to which the parasite adapts with difficulty, and the risk of resistance development is therefore low.
2. Nosemosis
Formic acid has a disinfectant effect and can contribute to reducing infectious pressure in the bee colony.
3. Chalkbrood (Ascosphaera apis)
The acidic environment limits the development of the disease pathogen and supports hygiene in the hive.
Controlled evaporation for higher safety
With uncontrolled application, formic acid can be risky for bees due to rapid evaporation. Formidol solves this problem with a double (regulatory) packaging that directs the release of vapors.
The evaporation strip is factory-sealed in regulatory packaging with holes. In the first 48 hours, evaporation occurs gradually so the bee colony can adapt. After two days, the regulatory packaging is removed and the strip continues to work more intensively, increasing the effect against remaining mites while maintaining safety for bees and the queen.
When and how to apply Formidol
Proper timing and suitable temperature are crucial. Application is recommended at daily temperatures above 20°C; with prolonged temperatures above 25°C, increased caution is needed. Formidol is most commonly used after honey extraction or during broodless periods (summer/autumn).
Recommended two-phase procedure:
Phase 1 (controlled evaporation)
Remove the strip from the bag and leave it in the regulatory packaging. Place it on the top bars or between supers so that the holes face down into the space above the brood combs (ensure space for vapor circulation). Leave to work for 48 hours.
Phase 2 (full evaporation)
After 48 hours, remove the strip, completely remove the regulatory packaging and place the strip itself back in the same location. Leave in the hive for another 1–2 days until the contents evaporate.
Safety recommendations and practical tips
Formic acid is corrosive – work with protective gloves and safety glasses. On warm days (especially above 25°C), application is better in the morning or evening. Ensure adequate hive ventilation (open entrance) to prevent excessive vapor concentration.
