Practical Advantages for Colony Treatment

Oxavar is designed for easy handling and efficient application in the field. It works on the principle of heating a solid substance, which then evaporates (sublimates). A major advantage is its portability – it is powered by a 12V car battery, so you can work even at apiaries without mains electricity (we recommend a battery with a capacity of over 40 Ah). The 150 W power consumption allows rapid achievement of the working temperature, reducing the time spent at each hive.

Safety and Proper Handling

During operation, basic safety rules must be followed to prevent damage to the hive or risk to the operator. Insert the heating element into the bottom board and ensure that the Oxavar is at a safe distance from the comb and other flammable parts (at least 2 cm). The device can reach temperatures of up to 400 °C. If it is near wood, we recommend using an insulating pad (e.g., a metal sheet or non-flammable mat) to prevent scorching or blackening of wooden parts.

For greater efficiency, it is advisable to seal the hive well during application – this reduces vapor escape and also prevents cold air from being drawn in, which would unnecessarily dilute the sublimate. The vaporization itself takes approximately 2.5 minutes. Then disconnect the device from the power source, but leave it in the hive for about 2 more minutes to allow complete vaporization and partial cooling. After removal, close the bottom board and after approximately 10 minutes you can ventilate the hive.

Dosage and Practical Recommendations

Always adjust the dose to the volume of the hive cavity. Common practice for this type of vaporizer recommends:

Single-brood-box hive: 1 g of powder (1 included measuring spoon)
Multi-brood-box hive: 2 g of powder (2 measuring spoons)

Pour the powder loosely, without tamping. Ideally, carry out the application during minimal flight activity, when most of the bees are inside the hive. The outdoor temperature should not drop below 2 °C.
