THYMOVAR strips 2 x 5 pcs

THYMOVAR® is an approved veterinary medicinal product aimed at treating varroosis in honey bees. This product, approved by the State Veterinary Administration of the Czech Republic, is eligible for European Union subsidies of up to 50%. The active ingredient in THYMOVAR® is thymol, a natural substance found in essential oils from thyme, wild thyme, and also in honey.

History and development

THYMOVAR® was developed in Switzerland by Andermatt BioVet AG in 1998, where it was also first registered. Andermatt BioVet AG, which specializes in the development and production of medicines for livestock since 1988, introduced this product to the market with the aim of fighting varroosis in bees. Currently, THYMOVAR® is registered as a medicine in 24 countries, including Switzerland, Austria, Cyprus, Israel, Netherlands, South Korea, Turkey, Algeria, Belgium, Germany, New Zealand, France, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Greece, Hungary, Portugal, Spain, Italy, England, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Poland.

Treatment principle

Although thymol was used for disinfection as far back as ancient Egypt, its effectiveness in suppressing varroosis in honey bees was discovered only recently. Thymol in low concentrations acts as a strong antiseptic, while in high concentrations it is lethal to many small animals. The specificity of thymol lies in its ability to kill Varroa destructor mites at lower concentrations than would be harmful to bees. THYMOVAR® is designed to create a sufficient concentration of thymol in the hive for a long time, which effectively eliminates Varroa destructor without endangering honey bees.

Application of the medication

THYMOVAR® is applied after the last honey harvest, when daily temperatures do not exceed 30°C. The application is simple and quick: THYMOVAR® strips are placed on the top frames of the beehive. Although THYMOVAR® was developed in Switzerland and is used in 24 countries, it can also be combined with Czech medications for fighting varroosis.

Effectiveness

Since THYMOVAR® was registered in 1998, it has been tested many times. There was always an effort to create different conditions, so tests were conducted in various countries. From the tests that were carried out, the average effectiveness was around 93%. THYMOVAR® achieved the highest effectiveness in France, exactly 98.8%. In 2009, further tests were conducted in France, which showed the high potential of the medication with a result of 98.8%. The average effectiveness from all sites was 92.32%.
