Swarm Lure Paste for Easy Swarm Capture (Charme des Abeilles)

Swarming is part of the natural life cycle of bees, but for beekeepers it often means unnecessary loss of bee colonies and time-consuming swarm tracking. The traditional swarm lure paste "Le Charme des Abeilles" (The Charm of Bees) helps guide the swarm exactly where you want it – into a prepared hive, swarm box or trap. It is especially useful when a swarm settles in a hard-to-reach place, such as high in a tree crown. Properly used paste saves time, helps save your own bees and also reduces the risk of problems with neighbors. Moreover, it can bring you a "bonus" in the form of stray swarms from the surrounding area and thus naturally expand your apiary.

Natural formula with a scent that bees know well

The paste is based on a proven traditional formula and contains a mixture of fragrant essences (e.g. geranial, neral, citral and limonene) that mimic the scent signals of the queen bee and the manifestations of the Nasonov gland. These "orientation" scents are used by bees when gathering and searching for a new home. The delicate citrus aroma is a strong guide for scout bees – it indicates that the selected location is suitable for swarm settlement. Bees can detect and actively seek out the scent even at greater distances (up to about 2 km, depending on terrain conditions and wind).

How to apply the paste for best results

The 30g tube packaging allows clean and precise application without unnecessary waste. Apply a small amount of paste – approximately an 8 cm strip (about 6 g) – to the entrance (flight hole) and add a small amount inside as well, ideally on the top bars of several frames or on the inner wall. One application works for approximately 8 to 10 days depending on weather. As the scent weakens, we recommend renewing the application (typically once a week) until successful capture. One tube is sufficient for approximately five applications, or about 40 days of continuous luring.

Practical tips for higher capture success

Success is significantly influenced by the placement of the swarm box or trap. Ideal is a height of 2–3 meters above ground, stable support and a location clearly visible to bees. Choose partial shade, sheltered from wind and facing south or southeast – this helps limit overheating on warm days. A great "trump card" is inserting at least one darker comb: the scent of old wax and propolis is very attractive to bees and often makes the difference. If you are working with a completely new hive, you can soften its "new" wood smell with brief smoking – for example, carefully burning and letting a small piece of crumpled newspaper burn out inside (without damaging the hive). For ethical reasons, we do not recommend placing traps in close proximity to other beekeepers' apiaries to avoid conflicts between beekeepers.

Results with swarm traps can vary – working with bees and nature always depends on the current swarming mood in the area, nectar flow strength and weather. Some beekeepers report quick success ("the swarm is already in the box"), others observe at least increased interest from scout bees that regularly check the location. The scent is usually delicately citrus, but the actual capture is also influenced by the suitability of the trap and its placement. During handling, avoid contact with eyes and skin – concentrated essences can cause irritation. Wash your hands after application and always seal the tube carefully. If you capture an unknown swarm, it is advisable to keep it separate initially and check the health status of the colony (including possible disease risks) before adding it among other hives.
