The interior of a hive is pitch black except for a small area of light around the ‘front door’. Everything that goes on in the hive is done by touch, feel or smell. Bees clearly don’t see each other inside the hive, so any house cleaning, feeding and other tasks have to be achieved in the dark and by touch. How then do they communicate what they see outside, when foraging, to the bees inside the hive in the dark? To advertise the source of nectar or pollen she has found, the returning worker bee performs the now famous ‘waggle dance’ which conveys information on the location of a food source in relation to the hive, the position of the sun and fight distance.
