This practical hive component reliably separates the brood chamber from the honey super – the queen bee stays where she should lay eggs, and you get combs designated only for honey storage. The metal construction is also appreciated for hygiene: the grid can be easily cleaned and heat-treated as needed (e.g., flame sterilization or boiling), which helps maintain healthy colonies and reduce the risk of disease transmission.

Gentle Separation of Brood Chamber and Honey Super

Metal queen (excluder) grid is available in several sizes and is suitable for various hive systems. Its main purpose is to prevent the queen from passing into the honey super, so she doesn't lay brood in honey combs. The openings in the grid are designed to allow worker bees to pass through safely, while the queen (and usually drones as well) remain in the brood chamber.

There are several queen excluder designs on the market (e.g., wire or stamped types). Wire grids are among the most suitable solutions because they have no sharp edges that could damage workers' wings. For comfortable hive operation, it is also recommended not to place the grid directly on the top bars of frames, but to leave space under the grid for bees to move freely.

Use in Queen Rearing and Long Lifespan

The grid can also be used in queen rearing – for example, to separate the queen from capped queen cells. In practice, it also serves for temporary separation of drones (e.g., for insemination and other breeding operations). Thanks to its metal construction, the grid is sturdy, dimensionally stable, and with proper maintenance will last many seasons. The round profile of the wires is gentle on bees, minimizing the risk of injury and unnecessary stress during passage.
