Metal queen excluder (queen grid) is part of the basic equipment for beekeepers who want to have only honey combs without brood in the honey super. Its main task is to reliably prevent the queen bee from passing into the honey super, so the queen remains in the brood chamber and does not lay eggs in the honey frames. The result is faster work during honey harvest and greater certainty that you will not encounter capped brood during extraction.

Gentle on Bees and Durable for Many Years

The queen excluder serves to separate the space where the queen and drones have no access. The openings are precisely calibrated so that worker bees can pass through them without problems. There are several types of excluders on the market – from stamped and punched (often plastic) to wire types. Wire excluders are very popular in practice: individual wires with round cross-section do not form sharp edges, thus minimizing the risk of wing damage during passage. Metal construction also excels in high strength, possibility of thorough disinfection (e.g., by boiling or flame sterilization) and long lifespan even with intensive use.

Use During Honey Flow and Queen Rearing

The excluder is used not only during the main honey flow when managing the colony through the brood chamber and honey super. You can also use it practically in queen rearing – for example, to separate the queen from capped queen cells. It also helps in situations where you need to separate drones for further work (e.g., when preparing for insemination) or organize the hive space according to the current needs of the colony. Practical tip: it is advisable not to place the excluder directly on the top bars of the frames, but to position it so that the bee space is maintained. This will reduce propolization and the formation of wax bridges.
