Complete Wooden Varroa Bottom Board for Langstroth Hive

Do you need a sturdy, practical, and well-designed hive foundation for your bee colony? This fully screened migratory varroa bottom board for the Langstroth hive is designed for beekeepers who want to keep track of their colony's condition while making everyday work easier. The complete bottom board design helps with ventilation, mite drop monitoring, and hive management throughout the entire year.

Well-thought-out design for a healthy colony and convenient management

The bottom board provides ample space for inserting a debris tray. The lower section is fitted with a sturdy stainless steel mesh with fine openings that allow Varroa destructor mites to fall through onto the tray while preventing bees from passing through. Thanks to the full-surface screening, you can monitor the natural mite drop across the entire bottom board area throughout the year. The screen also promotes effective hive ventilation even on hot summer days, including when a reduced entrance is used as robbing protection. The bottom board can be closed on both sides, features an opening entrance on a robust piano hinge, and a replaceable double-sided entrance reducer. The frame is equipped with two landing rails for stable placement of the hive body. The rear section of the bottom board has a practical closure on two hinges with a drilled and screened opening for convenient aerosol treatment without unnecessarily disturbing the bees. The bottom board also serves well during winter feeding of colonies or in combination with an empty hive body when shaking a swarm or brushing bees.

Sliding debris drawer included

This varroa bottom board is supplied as a complete set including a sliding PVC drawer with a thickness of 3 mm. The drawer is an essential tool for monitoring the health of the colony, particularly for checking the natural drop of Varroa destructor mites and for regular collection of winter debris for veterinary examination. All of this can be done without opening the hive, so there is no unnecessary cooling of the colony. During aerosol treatment, the drawer serves as an airtight base that helps ensure the proper course of treatment. The beekeeper thus gains a more accurate overview of what is happening inside the hive with minimal effort.

Anti-comb building grid for clean debris

The bottom board also includes a practical anti-comb building grid, often referred to as a comb barrier. During periods of strong building instinct, bees tend to use the free space in the deep bottom board area to build unwanted burr comb or drone comb. This can complicate ventilation and subsequent handling during inspections. The grid placed beneath the bottom bars of the frames effectively prevents this problem and guides the bees to build within the prepared frames. This eliminates the tedious cutting out of comb from the bottom board, and regular hive inspections are faster and more convenient.

Ready to use thanks to protective coating

The bottom board comes pre-finished with a protective surface coating from the factory, so you can use it straight out of the box. The wooden parts are treated with a high-quality, environmentally friendly water-based paint in a red-brown shade. The surface treatment helps protect the bottom board against moisture, temperature fluctuations, and normal weather conditions. This saves you the time needed for painting and waiting for the coat to dry.

Advantages of Paulownia wood

The bottom board is made from Paulownia tomentosa wood, which is popular among beekeepers for its low weight and good insulating properties. In Germany, Paulownia hives, also known as Kiri-Baum hives, are an increasingly sought-after choice. Thanks to the lightweight material, the entire bottom board weighs only 3 kg, which is especially appreciated during migratory beekeeping, hive relocation, or frequent handling. The wood structure contains numerous air pores, and therefore Paulownia naturally contributes to a more stable microclimate inside the hive. In winter, it helps protect the colony from cold, and in summer, it reduces overheating. The wood holds its shape well, resists moisture and wood-destroying pests, and contributes to the long service life of hive components.
