Hand-held wire embedder for foundation sheets – economy type

This simple hand-held wire embedder is designed for securing beeswax foundation sheets onto tinned or stainless steel frame wire. This practical beekeeping tool, also known as a spur wire embedder, allows you to embed wire into foundation without the need for electricity. Simply heat the toothed metal wheel in hot water or carefully over the flame of a spirit lamp, then run it along the wire. The heat slightly softens the wax, allowing the wire to sink firmly and evenly into the foundation sheet.

When preparing a larger number of frames, an electric wire embedding transformer is more suitable, as it significantly speeds up the work. However, the hand-held wire embedder is a reliable and affordable solution for smaller beekeeping operations, occasional use, or locations without access to the electrical grid.

How to properly embed foundation

The best results are achieved at room temperature, when the beeswax is pliable and the foundation sheet is not too brittle. Place the frame with evenly tensioned wire on a flat embedding board and lay the foundation sheet on top. Then run the heated toothed wheel smoothly and with gentle pressure along each wire. The wire should be firmly seated in the wax but should not pass through the foundation sheet. Proper embedding helps prevent warping and buckling of the drawn comb inside the hive.
