Procedure for preventive disinfection in bee colonies

FAM30

Significance of the preparation:

• Effectiveness: Broad spectrum (effective against viruses, bacteria, molds)
• Operating conditions: Works at temperatures from -10°C, in hard water, on any surface and in the presence of organic contamination.
• Active substance: Natural iodine
• Auxiliary substances: Non-ionic wetting agent based on alcohol, acids used in beekeeping (sulfuric, phosphoric)

Application:

• Immersion, spray, foam, wipe, aerosol, ULV, ultrasonic and thermal generator.

Use:

• Preventive disinfection and decontamination for dangerous diseases, interruption of infectious pressure and prevention of bacterial and mold multiplication for up to several months.

Area of use, recommended concentrations and dosage in beekeeping:

1) Hive parts and tools coming into contact with bees:

• Immersion treatment: Solution with 2% concentration (1:50 dilution ratio)
• Foam or spray treatment: 4% concentration (1:25 dilution ratio)

2) Beekeeping supplies and daily use tools, bee house, hive and cover from outside:

• Foam or spray treatment: 1% concentration (1:100 dilution ratio)

Perform preventive disinfection regularly to prevent introduction and spread of new diseases and parasites.

Use of FAM30 for disinfection:

Disinfection of hive, its parts and tools:

• Spray/foam disinfection:
  • Hives (inner surface of bottom board, supers, inner covers) of all materials after cleaning or flame treatment, disinfect with foam or spray FAM30 at 4% concentration at a dose of 300 ml solution per 1 m² of surface. Thoroughly treat the hive bottom.
  • Consumption: For inner surface of one bottom board, super and cover: 1.4 m² - 420 ml solution (17 ml FAM30 + 403 ml water)
• Immersion disinfection:
  • Frames, mating nucs, queen excluders and other tools after cleaning disinfect by immersion for 30 minutes in FAM30 bath at 2% concentration. At temperatures 0-10°C leave in bath for 90 minutes.
  • Important: For temperatures below 0°C contact a specialist.
  • Note: Always disinfect frames after each wax rendering (at most after one year).

Visual control of effectiveness:

• Spray: Material after treatment changes color to brown (from iodine).
• Foam: Material will be covered with ochre-brown foam for up to 30 minutes.
• Immersion: Effective solution has carmine-brown coloration, which changes to light brown/orange-yellow, then replace the solution.

After disinfection:

• Let treated hive parts dry and air out for 2-4 weeks in a dry and clean place with free air access.
• Perform preventive disinfection at least once a year. In case of colony deaths or diseases, perform disinfection immediately.

Warning:

• Combs that will be placed into bee colonies must not be dipped into disinfection.
• Do not use stores from dead colonies with unknown cause of death to feed other bee colonies.
• Diluted solutions have stability of 1 month.

Disinfection of beekeeping supplies and tools:

• Spray/foam disinfection:
  • Treat all surfaces not coming into contact with honey with FAM30 solution at 1% concentration at a dose of 300 ml solution per 1 m². Let act for at least 30 minutes or until dry.
  • Rinse tools coming into contact with honey with drinking water.
  • Stability of diluted solutions is 1 month.

Visual control of effectiveness:

• After spray treatment material changes color to brown.
• Foam: Material covered with ochre-brown foam for up to 30 minutes.

Final warnings:

• If you cannot use a high-pressure water device with foam nozzle or hand sprayer with foam nozzle, apply manually such a layer that it remains wet for at least 30 minutes.
• Use drinking water for rinsing.
• Alternative products: GPC8TM (concentration 2-4%), Vanodox® formula (concentration 1-2%).
• Burn unnecessary materials.
• In case of clinical signs of diseases increase frequency and thoroughness of disinfection according to focal disinfection procedures.
• For bee colonies with clinical signs of quarantine diseases proceed according to extraordinary veterinary measures (EVM).
• Always use protective equipment and follow correct procedures during disinfection. Thoroughly rinse tools coming into contact with food with drinking water.

General recommendation:

Rinse all tools coming into contact with food for bees or humans with drinking water after disinfection. For other tools and equipment let the disinfection dry.
