The Dadant Blatt hive is one of the most widespread hive types in the world, often used in migratory beekeeping or in stationary apiaries with abundant nectar sources. Its owners appreciate the large frames, good overwintering capabilities, prevention of swarming impulse, and very good ventilation of the brood chamber due to the large internal dimensions of the super. The traditional Dadant Blatt, a heavy horizontal hive with 15 brood frames and the same number of honey frames, has been criticized for two main drawbacks: heavy weight and a bottom board permanently attached to the hive box.

These negatives have been eliminated by transitioning to a modular hive type made of polystyrene. Such a Dadant Blatt hive is lightweight, and the separate bottom board, with a hygienic tray, allows for easy and quick colony inspection.

The larger dimensions of the Dadant Blatt brood frame allow the queen to lay eggs over a larger area, which helps prevent swarming impulse. Another advantage is overwintering in a single brood chamber. Bees can store sufficient supplies and have easy access to them. They don't need to move between supers to reach their food. Last but not least, the shallow frames in the honey super encourage bees to accumulate stores.

Very good ventilation in our Dadant Blatt hives is ensured by appropriately sized and positioned openings. If necessary, these can be closed with plugs supplied with the hives. Of course, hive security against pests has also been considered. In situations where we need a secure but well-ventilated hive, we use plugs with screens. Ventilation openings are located not only in the supers but also in the bottom board, inner cover, and roof/outer cover. All this to reduce excessive moisture inside the hive.

The polystyrene hive is resistant to weather conditions and very easy to disinfect. The outer walls are protected with a non-toxic paint in colors that bees can easily identify. It requires no special maintenance and is ready for immediate colony installation.

The bottom board is a very important part of a polystyrene hive. This set is equipped with a durable plastic bottom board with a debris tray, which allows monitoring of Varroa destructor mite drop. It also helps with proper air circulation inside the hive.
