Metal queen excluder is among the essential tools when working with bee colonies and we offer it in several sizes. This variant is wire-made, from solid steel wire, and its main task is to reliably prevent the queen from passing into the honey super. The queen thus remains in the brood chamber and does not lay eggs in honey super combs. During extraction, you then obtain honey without brood and without the risk of contamination by brood fluid.
The queen excluder serves to effectively separate the space where the queen and drones should not have access. The openings are calibrated so that only worker bees can pass through them without problems. There are several types of excluders on the market (e.g., Prokopovich or Hannemann), but in practice wire excluders have proven very effective. Thanks to the round profile of the wire, they have no sharp edges that could damage the wings of worker bees when passing through. For comfortable operation, it is advisable not to place the excluder directly on the top bars of the frames, but to install it maintaining the bee space, so that the bees can move freely under the excluder.
Main Benefits and Advantages of Metal Excluder
Metal construction excels in strength and long lifespan, which typically outlasts plastic alternatives. The round cross-section of the bars is gentle on bees and minimizes the risk of injury. A great advantage for beekeepers is also easy maintenance – the metal excluder can be safely boiled, rendered, or flame-sterilized to quickly remove wax and propolis deposits. This facilitates maintaining good hygiene in the hive and throughout the operation.
Other Practical Applications
Besides common use between the brood chamber and honey super, the excluder finds application in more demanding procedures. It is suitable, for example, in queen rearing for safely separating the queen from capped queen cells. It also helps with temporary separation of drones (e.g., when preparing for insemination) and in other situations where you need to precisely control the movement of individual bee castes in the hive configuration.
