Raising your own queens is one of the most interesting, but also most delicate activities in beekeeping. A moment of inattention, clumsy handling, or premature chewing out and a promising queen cell is lost. The protective queen cell protector (USA type) helps prevent these situations – it protects the queen cell during work in the colony, increases the probability of successful queen emergence, and facilitates safe insertion and inspection of queen cells.
Reliable protection of queen cell during development
The protective cage is made of durable plastic and designed to prevent chewing out of the queen cell from the side while protecting it from mechanical damage. The shape of the protector leaves enough space for air circulation, which is essential for proper queen bee development. Installation is simple – the cage can be used on a queen cell cup (up to 12 mm diameter), both with and without a plug.
Practical applications
The protector can be inserted from above between the top bars as needed, but is most commonly used in these proven methods:
1. Direct insertion into comb: You push the protector with queen cell directly into the brood comb in a queenless colony or into a compartment in a mating nucleus using the side forks. The queen cell is protected and after emergence the queen has space to continue naturally in further development and subsequent mating.
2. Raising multiple queens simultaneously: You place the protector on a cup with a capped queen cell and then attach a cylindrical (or classic wooden) cage to it. The queen emerges directly into the cage, which is practical when raising multiple queen cells in one colony – this prevents the first emerged queen from destroying the other queen cells.
