The fermentation lock or airlock is a device used in beer brewing and wine making that allows carbon dioxide released during fermentation to escape the fermenter, while not allowing air to enter the fermenter, thus avoiding oxidation.

Two-Chamber Fermentation Airlock with Protective Cap

Give your mead undisturbed and safe fermentation. The plastic two-chamber fermentation airlock, often referred to as a fermentation tube, belongs to the basic equipment of every beekeeper who values the quality of homemade mead. It functions as a reliable one-way valve – it allows the escape of carbon dioxide produced during fermentation, while preventing air from entering back into the fermentation vessel.

Why is a fermentation airlock important in mead production

Mead fermentation is a process sensitive to the surrounding environment. Access of oxygen, wild yeasts or bacteria can lead to unwanted oxidation, formation of vinegar or acetification. The fermentation tube creates a water seal that effectively eliminates these threats. The transparent material also allows you to monitor yeast activity – by regular bubbling you can easily tell how fermentation is progressing.

Main advantages for beekeepers and home producers

Protection against insects and impurities: The airlock includes a red protective cap, which is particularly useful in warm periods. It prevents fruit flies and small insects from entering the liquid in the fermentation tube and thus protects your mead from contamination.

Less need for water monitoring: The closed construction with cap limits water evaporation from the tube. You don't need to check the liquid level as often and fermentation proceeds smoothly and without fluctuations.

Food safety and easy maintenance: The fermentation airlock is made from durable PVC with food contact certification. The material is taste and odor neutral and can be easily washed and used repeatedly.

Instructions for use

Using the fermentation tube is simple and quick. Insert it into the hole in the rubber stopper or lid of the fermentation vessel (rubber stopper for carboy neck is usually selected and purchased according to neck diameter). Fill both chambers approximately half to two-thirds with clean water and attach the protective cap. Carbon dioxide will escape during fermentation, while outside air will not enter the vessel.
