New type of refractometer, KING model. This model has several improvements, better shielding glass and new system of temperature compensation.

KING Honey Refractometer – Precise Honey Ripeness Control

Proper moisture content is crucial for beekeepers – it determines whether honey remains stable long-term without risk of fermentation. The KING Refractometer is an improved optical instrument for quick and reliable measurement that shows water content and sugar content (Brix) within seconds. This allows you to easily verify that you're extracting honey at the right time and that it meets standard requirements for quality honey.

How KING Differs from Standard Refractometers

The KING model was developed with emphasis on higher durability for daily use in the honey house and operation. Compared to standard models (e.g., Catania), it offers practical improvements:

  • More durable cover glass: The PMMA cover glass used better withstands scratching and common chemical effects. The viewing area remains clear longer and the scale stays easily readable.
  • Protected calibration: The calibration screw is located on the bottom of the instrument, reducing the risk of accidental decalibration during handling and helping protect the refractometer from water ingress during cleaning.

Reliable Results Thanks to ATC

The refractometer is equipped with Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC), which limits the influence of ambient temperature on measurement results. You'll appreciate this when working in the honey house and in the field where temperature may fluctuate slightly. For the most accurate measurement, it's recommended that both the sample and instrument be at approximately 20°C.

°Bx-BRIX - % Mass Sacch - saccharometer - this scale allows reading weight percentages of sugar concentration in water. Measures sugar and water in %. Brix/ATC scale range 58 - 92 %. Water scale 12 - 26 % (1 division = 0.5°). Measurement accuracy is 0.1 %
Refractometer - for measuring water content in honey, saccharometer-1.

How Measurement Works

Operation is simple and quick: apply a few drops of well-mixed honey to the prism, fold down the cover glass, and look toward the light. On the scale you immediately read:

  • Water content in % (range 12–26 %)
  • Brix sugar content (range 58–92 %)

Tip: After measurement, clean the prism with lukewarm water and a soft cloth so honey residues don't dry on. The instrument is supplied calibrated. Calibration solution is not included in the package (can be purchased separately).

Important Maintenance Notice

The refractometer is a precise optical instrument, so it deserves gentle handling. After each measurement, rinse the prism with lukewarm water, gently wipe and dry with a soft cloth. Do not rinse the instrument under running water and do not immerse it – water could get into the optical part. The refractometer is usually calibrated from the factory. Calibration liquid is not included in the package, but for normal use you typically don't need it right from the start.

Operating Instructions

METHOD OF USE

  1. Preparation: Point the front end of the refractometer toward bright light and rotate the eyepiece focusing ring until the scale is clearly visible.

  2. Measurement: Open the cover plate and clean the measuring surface with a piece of soft cotton flannel. Drop 1–2 drops of the measured solution. Close the cover plate and press it lightly, then read the light-shadow boundary on the corresponding scale. The reading is the numerical value of the measured liquid.

  3. After measurement: Clean the measuring surface and cover plate with damp gauze and carefully store the instrument.

WARNINGS AND MAINTENANCE

  1. Zero liquid and sample adjustment should be performed at the same temperature. If temperature changes significantly, the zero point should be set once every 30 minutes.

  2. After use, do not wash the instrument with water to prevent water from getting inside the instrument.

  3. This is a precise optical instrument. Handle it gently and take good care of it. Do not touch or scratch the optical surface. Store it in a dry, clean, and non-corrosive environment to prevent the surface from molding and fogging. During transport, avoid strong impacts.

  4. If consumers use the instrument according to the stated method of use, optical performance should not change.

TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION

Reference temperature is 20°C. During operation, temperature should be adjusted according to the correction table.

Models marked ATC are equipped with automatic temperature compensation. They have an additional function that allows the user to focus on measurement without worrying about temperature. Compensation range is 0~30°C.
