Stainless Steel Frame Wire 0.4 mm – 500 g Spool

A properly wired frame is the basic prerequisite for sturdy honeycomb, correct foundation embedding, and safe honey extraction without damaging the combs. Stainless steel frame wire with a diameter of 0.4 mm is a reliable choice for every beekeeper who wants frames that are strong, hygienic, and long-lasting. The 500 g spool contains 450 meters of wire. The number of frames depends on their size and the wiring method used.

Advantages of AISI 304 Stainless Steel in the Hive

The wire is made from AISI 304 stainless steel, which is valued in beekeeping for its high durability and food-safe properties. In the hive environment, where moisture, fumes, and organic acids are present, it does not corrode or oxidize. This prevents contamination of wax and honey, as well as rust formation on the wooden frames.

Stainless steel is especially appreciated when treating Varroa mite infestations with formic acid or oxalic acid, which gradually deteriorate standard tinned wire. Thanks to stainless steel, frames remain functional even after repeated colony treatments, and there is no need to re-wire them frequently.

Optimal Strength and Easy Handling

The 0.4 mm diameter represents an ideal compromise between strength and flexibility. The wire is rigid enough to support the foundation and comb during extraction in the honey extractor, yet flexible enough for comfortable tensioning. It does not break during use, shapes well, and allows precise tightening with wire tensioning pliers (wire crimper).

The material is gentle on the wooden frames and does not cut excessively into the side bars. The use of stainless steel eyelets in the holes (e.g., 3 mm) is possible but not essential. If needed, the wire can be easily straightened and re-tensioned.

Long Frame Lifespan and Proven Method

Frames wired with stainless steel wire can be safely boiled in hot water or cleaned in a steam wax melter after the season. The wires do not need to be removed – after cleaning, simply re-tension them lightly with a wire crimper. To restore tension, crimping a 2–3 cm section is usually sufficient.

Practical tip: Thread the wire through all the holes in the side bars and secure one end with a small nail (e.g., 10×1.4 mm). Before fastening the other end, gently bend the side bars inward. After driving in the nail, release the side bars – they will spring back and the wire will tension evenly. A frame prepared this way is ideal for embedding foundation with a transformer with a minimum output of 100 W (at 12 V, at least 8 A).
